Live By Living helps reduce isolation, anxiety and depression among cancer survivors and caregivers by connecting them with nature and one another. Our walks, hikes, retreats, conditioning programs and on-line community programs improve survivors' and caregivers' physical and emotional outlook.

Live By Living is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Our programs are free and made possible with your generous support. Thank you for helping us bring nature, community and healing to more cancer survivors and caregivers.

Testimonials

"After completing the three-month Cancer to 14K program and climbing Gray's Peak I realized I have been feeling better than any time since my original diagnosis three and a half years ago-feeling better physically and emotionally. It was a fabulous and energizing experience for me. And great fun too! Thank you for making it so good. I suspect the others in our group have similar sentiments. The icing on the cake was the bonding and mutual support of the six of us who made it through the program." John, 78-year-old Stage IV lung cancer survivor.

"I feel strong."

"Nature and the earth give a perspective - your body is completely supported. The people and sharing inspired me - I have the strength to do what is important and necessary."

"Unbelievable experience! I felt so supported encouraged, appreciated for who I was. I saw changes in people who were accepted for who they are, where they've been and encouraged into the future."

"Amazing connections! It caused breakthroughs being connected to your disease on a completely different level. First time in many years I was pampered and taken care of and it was a very emotional experience. Thank you."

"I made friendships with people who understand what I am going through."

"It's being able to put things into perspective -- when I thought things were so dire two years ago, to think that I'm standing on a mountain top at 12,000 feet, it's -- really, anything's possible."

"Since you got me there, I now know that I can do it again. Thank you seems inadequate for the receiving of hope, friendship and joy."

"It is a wonderful opportunity to share experiences and good times with others while spending time outdoors and in nature within a safe environment."

"I think that being out in nature is a healing experience. It's like the natural setting hugs you, touches you, unlike a person can."

"I have more gratitude in my heart having completed the winter hut trip. And Wow! I am an amazing and capable person. I snowshoed into and out of a hut located in the mountains. I have friends who have never done that. Yay for me!"

"It was a great experience. It's wonderful to focus with other cancer survivors on living."

Mission

To connect cancer survivors and caregivers to nature and one another via walks, hikes and retreats.

Background Statement

Live By Living, founded in 2008, is inspired by the life of Julie Wrend. First diagnosed with breast cancer when she was 34 and passing away in 2007 after a 19-year battle, Julie considered the mountains and deserts to be her church.

Guided by Julie's example, Live By Living harnesses the solace of nature, the health benefits of exercise, and the camaraderie of shared experience to give survivors and caregivers new skills to chart their own journey through life.

"People say to me, "You're only 50 years old. How can you handle living with a terminal diagnosis like Stage IV?" The answer is that I live by living, I love by loving, and I am courageous courageously."

-Julie Wrend, 2004
