Testimonials

“I believe you all do a wonderful job. It is fantastic to work with you. It is such a rich experience for the children in so many ways. They learn a lot about the outdoors, which otherwise does NOT happen, unless you all teach them about it. So, there is so much that comes from new things and stepping out of our comfort zones. They also come away with ways to be more courageous, communicative, and reflective both individually and as a group. I believe what also makes the experience really impactful is the way you treat and interact with the kids. You set expectations while also treating the kids with a whole lotta love, respect, encouragement, and patience!! Many thanks!!“ - Annunciation Catholic School

"By the end of the summer, my teens looked forward to the day of the week we would make the trip to see you. New kids who joined us through the summer were caught up in that anticipation and came ready to be taught and challenged. You attracted a great team of expertise and personality this summer, and we enjoyed them." - Director, Denver YMCA Teen Camp

“I am so grateful for the Lincoln Hills staff and leadership! We have an AMAZING time when we come and learn so much from all of the staff members! It is such a special place and it’s so healing and restorative to visit and learn from everyone!” - Community Partner Organization

Mission

Lincoln Hills Cares develops the next generation of young leaders through outdoor and environmental education, cultural history exploration, and workforce advancement. Our programs empower communities by providing equitable access to and opportunities for outdoor and environmental learning and action.

Background Statement

Founded by Robert F. Smith and Matthew Burkett, and based in Colorado, LHC is a charitable organization that strives to increase equity in accessing outdoor resources and opportunities for youth, families and communities that may experience barriers.

Historic Lincoln Hills (Black Hawk, Colorado) has served as an oasis for People of Color to participate in outdoor recreation activities since 1922, which at that time was the only outdoor African American resort west of the Mississippi River. The story of Lincoln Hills is truly inspirational; it combines the very best American ideals of vision, equity, justice, and community. We utilize this platform as a unique opportunity to provide impactful, culturally relevant programs that foster connections between cultural history, nature, science, and conservation.

Our Vision - All people have equitable access to, feel welcome in, and advocate for outdoor spaces. We envision a society that recognizes and addresses the historical and ongoing systemic barriers that have prevented under-resourced communities from fully experiencing the benefits of nature. We strive for a world where outdoor recreation and conservation efforts are inclusive and reflect the diverse needs, perspectives, and contributions of all people.
