Testimonials

Dear Iris,
I want to thank you for supporting me and helping me do better in school. I used to hate school. It was boring, and I felt stupid at the end of the day. Coming to Legacy of Learning makes me feel smart. I feel like I know what I am doing. I have learned to read and write and do math at the center, I am getting A's and B's now instead of D's and F's. When I was diagnosed with ADHD in elementary school, I was put in special education. Now I am in 11th grade, and I am no longer in Special Ed. I also get my homework done and hand it in early.
Michael, my teacher at Legacy, has helped me so much that I am one of the best students in my class. I used to hate reading and writing, but now I read for pleasure. Last year, I received an award for top Language Arts sophomore, which was given to 3 out of 300 students. I was so excited.
Thanks to Legacy of Learning I am more confident, and I want to go to college and I know I will have a better future. Please share this letter with anyone who has doubts about coming here. Thank you all, Jake Leslie

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing this letter in support of the programs of Legacy of Learning. For the past six months, we have developed a strong working relationship with this company to provide educational assistance to some of our most challenging youth.

The youth we have on probation often present with a variety of issues: substance use/addiction, anger problems, mental health issues, trauma history, etc. It seems that regardless of their presenting problems, most of our youth have demonstrated a pattern of failure in their education and have no desire to engage in school. In the fall of 2011, we began selecting teens to be taught one to one with Legacy teachers in order to improve their basic academic skills. Initial tests determine their skill levels and an individualized educational plan is created to meet their needs. The curriculum, Direct Instruction, has had a tremendous and positive impact on our kids on probation. I have seen some absolutely amazing outcomes in this short of a period of time! We referred one youth that had been a homeless methamphetamine addict for years and had not been in school for over 4 years. The staff of Legacy did their magic, working with him individually on a daily basis. He recently received his GED (in the top 15%) and has applied to local colleges. As a result of the Direct Instruction program, he now has a sense of success and exudes confidence in his abilities. This has been the case with most of the kids we refer to Legacy of Learning. The quality of the education and the passion and commitment of the staff have changed many lives. Our department has been very impressed and excited at the outcomes we see in the youth that are fortunate enough to participate. Unfortunately, our funding is quickly dwindling, resulting in our inability to utilize the program for the rest of the fiscal year.

We would appreciate support for the rest of this year. Our intention is to continue to utilize this amazing program in 2013 as we know that it works!
Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or clarification.
Sincerely,
Sharon Sandoval, Probation Supervisor

From Boulder Valley Family Literacy
To Whom It May Concern:
I am Susan Taylor of the Boulder Valley Family Literacy Program. We serve low income families with high educational needs. Our program consists of adult education (ESL, GED and computer classes), parenting, child education (early childhood and K-5) and parent and child together time. Our mission is to help children succeed in school.
While we provide much support, some of our children need intensive tutoring in order to experience success in school. To date Legacy of Learning has helped 9 children from our program with one-on-one tutoring that has changed their lives. Most recently Eileen and Manuel have been going to Legacy twice a week. Over the last couple of months I have personally seen Manuel reading book after book to the other children in his class or to his mother. This is a child who would NEVER pick up a book in the past. Both children have improved in their school performance.
We are so grateful to Legacy of Learning for the scholarships that have made such a difference to the children participating in our program. At this time we have another child, Jose, who is in desperate need of help. We sincerely hope Legacy of Learning will be able to continue to fund scholarships so that Jose and children like him will have this invaluable opportunity...

Mission

Our mission is to provide personalized and effective supplementary education to accelerate learning, increase self-esteem and positively alter the trajectory of each student in need in order to transform at-risk youth into youth of promise.

Background Statement

What: Formed in 1998 to teach fundamental academic skills to Boulder County's at-risk and economically disadvantaged elementary and secondary students.

How: At the heart of our program is the curriculum Direct Instruction:

- A systematic, research-proven, fast-paced, multi-sensory teaching methodology which is highly interactive

- Our work is on a one to one basis, whenever possible, or in small homogenous groups.

- Instruction is founded on the belief that all students can learn regardless of their educational histories, behavioral patterns, or learning preferences.

Why: According to the Community Foundation of Boulder County, "Year after year, the achievement gap persists as one of the most stubborn issues in our community."

- By 3rd grade, only 50% of Boulder County's disadvantaged youth are proficient in math and reading.

- By 10th grade, only 14% are proficient in math and reading.

*For example, without support, about half of the Latino male students in St. Vrain School District will fail to graduate from high school.

*Dropping out of high school leads to higher rates of poverty, unemployment and disgruntled young adults.

Progress: In the past 14 years, our in-house and volunteer instructors have educated over 1,000 low-income students.

- Currently, we are serving 125 students and receiving referrals more rapidly than last year.

- More than 80% of our students test at least one grade level higher in the area of focus after 30 hours of instruction.

What makes us different: While there are many organizations dedicated to serving the needs of at-risk and economically disadvantaged youth, there are few that are exclusively academic in focus.

- Difficulty in school often leads to difficulty in life; our students learn that they are capable of significant academic achievement, and this dynamic change affords them the opportunity to be successful, contributing members of society.

- It is our enduring mission to keep these students from falling through the cracks.
