Mission Statement

Through education, resource networking and positive relationship building, we form respectful, productive family partnerships that create thriving, empowered individuals who are self-reliant and who envision a hopeful future for themselves, their families and their communities.

Organization History

The La Plata Family Centers Coalition (LPFCC) began in 1984 as a Mother's Center, located in Durango, Colorado, where mothers and their children met for support and socialization. In 1993, the Mother's Center transformed into the Parents Center after a statewide initiative and funding resources shifted to include parents. During that reorganization, the Parents Center expanded to sites in Bayfield, Ignacio, and Fort Lewis Mesa. To include all sites, the name changed to La Plata Family Centers Coalition. In 2014, LPFCC expanded the Access to Healthcare Program into Archuleta County and began co-locating staff at the La Plata Department of Human Services. In 2015, LPFCC expanded again into Archuleta County with the Colorado Community Response (CCR) program. In addition, LPFCC houses a Family Navigator within the Department of Human Services in Archuleta County who provides Family Support Services (FSS). In 2017, LPFCC expanded the Colorado Community Response (CCR) to La Plata and San Juan Counties in partnership with the La Plata County Department of Human Services. In mid-2017, in an effort to better support families, LPFCC relocated to within a block from La Plata Department of Human Services, and the Early Childhood Council (ECC).
~Bayfield Afterschool and Summer Enrichment Program - Families are stronger when they are more financially secure. The ability and relief to have safe and affordable child care available allows parents to provide for their families. Children who are given a safe and engaging space while their parents work do better in school and at home. The Afterschool & Summer Enrichment offers low-cost after school and summer child care and includes evidenced-based program, tutoring, and homework assistance.
~Early Childhood Education Program - Raising children is hard. It can be even harder when you have other barriers such as lack of education, poverty and other stressors in a parent's life. Our Early Education program enhances a parent's knowledge and resilience by offering three different programs for direct services to parents.
Our Parents as Teachers program teaches parents to become the main educator in their child's life. Our Bright by Three program works to take advantage of those early years when a child's development is most important to learning life-long skills that will increase a child's chances of success later in life. And our parenting groups, and classes, offer opportunities for parents to learn new skills (through Love and Logic classes), and for parents in the community to find other parents to learn from, and to bond with through Foster parent night out events, and Group Connections.
~Family Support Services Program - Our Family Support Services address a wide variety of issues. Families often come to us in crisis; food insecurity, stress in raising children, a need for safety and direction. We provide an ongoing food pantry, a baby supply bank, some limited emergency funds and gift cards. We provide direct services such as enrollment in health coverage, strengthening parenting skills, diversion program to prevent state intervention in Child Protection Services (Colorado Community Response), resource and community referrals.

Keep up the good job. Great staff members and will definitely recommend program and staff member.
Excellent program! It has changed my life. I hope more families will take advantage of what this program has to offer! I have reached or surpassed all my goals. It helps to have someone make you write them down. It was easier for me to reach goals when I could see them in front of me.
