Description

Immigrant Pathways Colorado makes self-development grants to immigrants/refugees/asylees who are documented (in the country legally) and living in poverty. The grants are for such things as learning English, applying for citizenship, becoming a medical, pharmaceutical or dental assistant, training to become a medical interpreter, becoming certified as a real estate appraiser, getting a Commercial Drivers License and much more. Grants are never made to the individual, but only to the organization/agency that will help them improve the quality of life for their families. Many grants are to educational institutions, including Arapahoe Community College, where Immigrant Pathways Colorado sponsors scholarships for immigrant and refugee students. .

Evidence of Program's Success

Immigrant Pathways Colorado's self-development grants help highly motivated immigrants and refugees improve the quality of life for their families.

One applicant for a self-development grant from Immigrant Pathways Colorado was from Ethiopia. She had enrolled in medical school and passed all her exams the first time, but didn't have the money to fly to interviews for medical internships. Immigrant Pathways paid for her airfare to internship interviews and today she is a qualified MD caring for minority patients in Chicago.

Another applicant, a refugee, had been a dentist in Iraq but had to take a special course and training to practice in Colorado. Immigrant Pathways Colorado provided her with tuition for that course; she passed all her exams and is now has been accepted into the highly competitive international dental training program at Colorado State University.
