The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs is proud to be a no-kill shelter; we dedicate as much time and resources as necessary to find the right home for every animal that comes through our doors. We also understand there are obstacles in the way of long-term pet ownership and have grown our pet retention services and resources to help the Pagosa Springs community overcome those barriers. As the only animal shelter serving homeless dogs and cats in Archuleta County, we reunite lost pets with their families, promote adoptions, provide free pet food to food pantries and individuals in need, offer low-cost vaccinations to the public, subsidize community spay/neuter, assist in emergency medical care and vet services to those that qualify, and aid feral cats TNR.

This holiday season, our shelter is filled to capacity, more so than ever before. Adoptions are down nationwide, and shelters all over are seeking alternative resources to care for their animals. We are so grateful for the loyal and generous support of Pagosa Springs that has enabled our work thus far, but we still need your help. Every dollar you give makes a difference in the lives of the pets in our care, as well as the people in our town. Please consider a meaningful donation to the well-being of the animals and people of Pagosa Springs.

Testimonials

"Great people! They truly have their animals' best interests at heart, and they do an excellent job of taking care of these beautiful creatures until they can find that "forever" home. I got a wonderful dog from them and couldn't be happier! If you're thinking about a rescue, dog or cat, be sure to check out the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs!"
----Bob Johnson, adopter of Jax
"I am so grateful to the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs for the emergency medical voucher I received to take my dear dog, Lexi, in to have the suspicious growth on her nose examined. She is so precious to me. I am unemployed at this time and was worried sick that delaying an exam could endanger her life. Thank you from the bottom of my heart!"
----Steve Meier
"We had owned dogs for over 40 years but never had adopted one. We appreciated the competency, efficiency, and dedication of your professional staff.....who selected Ramone as a dog who would accommodate our needs and shepherded us through the adoption process, which went very smoothly......We feel blessed to have a wonderful companion like Ramone at our advanced ages, and we are confident that Ramone appreciates and enjoys being a happy family member."
-----Bernard and Ethel Kolbor, adopters of Ramone

Mission

Our mission as a no-kill shelter is to provide a safe haven for animals in need, promote adoptions, humanely reduce pet overpopulation through aggressive spay/neuter programs, support lifelong pet ownership, and to educate the community.

Background Statement

The Humane Society of Pagosa Springs, originally known as Upper San Juan Humane Society, was founded in 1984 and held its first fundraising event with the raffle of a gold coin and a benefit concert performed by local singer-songwriter, Dan Fogelberg. Those initial efforts raised $20,000. Local contractors pitched in and used those modest funds to build the area's first animal shelter the next year. In 1994, the organization opened a thrift store to help generate revenue for the operation of the animal shelter. The store has grown into one of the most popular shopping venues in town and benefits not only the animals but the entire community by offering new and gently used quality goods at reasonable prices. In 1999, the organization's name was officially changed to the Humane Society of Pagosa Springs (HSPS).

The HSPS animal shelter is the only such facility within a sixty-mile radius and serves all of Archuleta County. As space at the facility permits, the shelter also reaches out to underserved parts of northern New Mexico to offer a safe haven to dogs and cats that otherwise might face a very bleak future. The HSPS animal shelter has been designated a no-kill facility by N0KillNetwork.org. HSPS does its absolute best to ensure that every animal that enters the shelter gets an opportunity for a new start at living a good life.

The HSPS animal shelter is situated on eleven acres just outside the town of Pagosa Springs in Archuleta County, with some of the most breathtaking mountain vistas in the area. The shelter is not large, compared to many such facilities, with a capacity limited to approximately seventy animals (depending on species and age). Nevertheless, for a relatively small facility in a rural part of the state the shelter has implemented some progressive and innovative programs, including but not limited to: an enrichment training program for dogs and cats to stimulate them both mentally and physically while they are in the shelter; a feral cat Trap-Neuter-Return program; a post-adoption dog training program available to adopters at no cost; and a community spay/neuter program that provides no-cost and low-cost spay/neuter surgeries for pets of local residents.
