In honor of Tony's birthday, we decided to ask for donations in lieu of birthday presents this year. Our charity of choice is The Kempe Foundation, which is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focused on the prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect.

The Kempe Center is also celebrating a birthday this year. In 1962, Dr. C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues exposed the reality of child abuse for the first time in their defining paper, The Battered Child Syndrome. This paper is lauded as the single most significant event in giving doctors a way to identify and understand child abuse. Inspired by these findings, Dr. Kempe founded the Kempe Center for the Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect to create a network of professionals to improve the care and well-being of children and families everywhere. Fifty years later, the Kempe Center celebrates its 50th birthday and today is recognized as a world leader in innovating solutions to prevent and treat child abuse, neglect and trauma.

The Kempe Foundation invests in the people and programs that build better futures for Colorado's children. We support programs that lead to hope. The Kempe Foundation supports research-based programs offered by the professionals at the Kempe Center that are proven to prevent child abuse and neglect from happening, advance training for professionals in the field, and improve the lives of children and families.
