Happy Cats Haven

Felines are our focus at Happy Cats. We rescue the full spectrum of cats, and don't neglect harder-to-place adults, seniors & special needs. We give everyone the best health care and the most positive experience possible so they return to the loving, adoptable cats they were before becoming homeless

This program is a collaboration with our local branches of the Pikes Peak Library District. Our cats and kittens welcome children into their colony rooms with books provided by the library. Reading out loud builds reading confidence while giving our happy cats family time with the children while they wait to be adopted. Smiles and purrs abound!

Description

Many cats are surrendered to shelters due to treatable behavioral issues. We want to help people keep their cats!

This is a dedicated helpline for cat lovers everywhere to find help with their cat behavior problems. Our goal is to help cats stay in their homes by reducing stress for everyone--cats and their guardians alike.

Ask Ms Kitty is meant to help with basic behavior challenges and identify when to refer more serious health and/or behavior issues to veterinarians or cat behavior counselors for evaluations or examinations.

Happy Healthy Cats

Description

With well over half our adoptions going to adult cats, we are committed to finding homes for this high-risk population. On average, 20% of our cats are higher-risk like orphans, seniors and special needs, both in health and behavior.

We work with our partner veterinarians to make sure that every cat receives the best care possible. We use our Fear Free and Shy Cat handling plus positive reinforcement training to help them regain trust and return to the loving cats they were before they lost their homes.

Many of our kittens are born from abandoned mother cats. Our loving foster families spend weeks rehabilitating these often-fearful babies. We focus on turning them into adaptable, happy cats who break the chain of feline homelessness by not adding to the outside cat population.

Evidence of Program's Success

Over half of our adoptions go to higher-risk adult cats every year. In addition, every year we rehabilitate hundreds of fearful kittens into happy, socialized cats who never need to be surrendered again.

Description

Cat lives can span a human generation, 15-20 years. We are here to support the full life cycle of all cats, as many of their nine lives as they need. We offer lifetime behavioral support and referrals for all our adopters through our adoption process, on our website, through hands-on cat classes and now by phone and emails to our Ask Ms. Kitty Helpline.

We are one of the only shelters in the area that follows up with adopters after adoption to make sure that the match was successful. We guarantee every adopter the option of returning their cat to us at any point in the cat's lifetime.

Our Nine Lives Support and guaranteed return policy helps us make sure that Save Means Stay, so when our cats get adopted, they stay adopted, helping reduce the numbers of homeless cats in the Pikes Peak Region.

Evidence of Program's Success

Happy Cats Haven has adopted out over 2,700 cats since we opened in 2011. The adoption rate of shelter cats in our region has continued to rise as we continue to help lower the numbers of homeless cats and kittens, both before and after surrender.

Description

Happy Cats Haven's TNRCare (Trap-Neuter-Return Care) program works in partnership with other regional TNR programs to provide spays and neuters to reduce the number of feral and abandoned street cats in our community.

Through the TNR clinics of the Humane Society of the Pikes Peak Region and Denver Dumb Friends League's Solutions Clinic, we facilitated the spays and neuters of 426 community cats in 2017, and fed over 1,200 homeless cats around our region. We partner with many local businesses and organizations to collect and distribute donated food for low income colony feeders.

Photos

Evidence of Program's Success

We facilitated over 400 spays and neuters of community cats to the Pikes Peak area community in 2017, mostly in underserved populations who could not otherwise afford to control the population of the cats they care for. Those cats would have contributed to an increase of thousands of homeless cats and untold suffering without our assistance.

Description

Happy Cats is always in need of people who can take into their homes--and their hearts--kittens and cats who need extra TLC before they can come into our colonies.

We provide the resources (including food, litter and vet care) and ask that you provide a safe space, time and love.

In our region, thousands of kittens never survive to find loving homes simply because there are not enough people to help raise them. You can give your children the magic of kittens-and the responsibility of animal care--without adding to our region's serious cat overpopulation issues. You'll have great fun while knowing you are preparing kittens to become cats who will never again be left homeless.

Other families may not be able to have cats because someone in the family has allergies. Some have found that having foster cats in one room allows some family members to experience "kitty therapy" while keeping other members happy and feline free.

Still others know they can't have pets because of their mobile lifestyles, including military families and seniors who like to travel. Fostering can give you the love of cats while helping a needy cat or kittens.

Sometimes we take in cats who are generally healthy and adoptable but need a little "vacation" from Happy Cats in order to stay happy. Others may need some extra behavioral work in order to really shine. Welcoming one of these cats into your home can be just as rewarding as having kittens.

Photos

Evidence of Program's Success

Every year, we find forever homes for hundreds of well-socialized kittens who grow up to be Happy Cats. Our Foster Families also help us to recover adult cats from the trauma of abandonment and regain their trust and love for humans.

Description

Our volunteers are the heart and soul of Happy Cats. Without them, none of our thousands of cats and kittens would have found their families.

We have over 150 people who help out with every aspect of running a busy shelter. This can include cleaning and feeding colonies, adoption counseling, fostering cats and kittens, helping with the office, creating videos or photos of the cats, marketing and social media support, supporting our retail shop, clicker and play therapies, staffing events and fairs, and simply spending quality time with the cats. This often becomes "kitty therapy," with the cats soothing our volunteers as much as the cats are soothed by them.

Our monthly orientations make sure that everyone is grounded in our Fear Free handling procedures for their safety as well as the cats. We offer additional training for Colony Technicians, Shy Cat Handlers, Clicker Trainers and advanced Medical Assistance if you wish.

We are constantly growing our volunteer program so we can help more cats and kittens. Please contact us if you are interested in making a difference in their lives.
