Testimonials & Impact Stories

Flurry, Frosty, and SnowflakeThese Siamese kittens were born without eyelids, and surgery to remove their eyes was the only way to keep them comfortable and pain-free. In foster care with Lynn, part of our volunteer village, they healed and learned to navigate their world, surprising everyone with how playful and confident they became. Their progress showed just how adaptable animals can be when given patience and the right support.

"My husband and I adopted Juliet aka Jules a little over two weeks ago and continue to fall more in love with her every day! Even our finicky cat, Flavor, can't resist cuddling up to Jules. Jules and Chief (our other pittie) seem to be soulmates! They are inseparable- from obedience classes to long hikes and everything in between. Jules is a true joy to our family! In our neighborhood, Jules and Chief are regular celebrities- milking the spotlight and loving all the attention (and treats!) Our local police even find themselves charmed by our dynamic duo. Thank you for all the care Jules received while at HSSPV. Words cannot express our gratitude!" - Dominick & Bailey P.

"I adopted my cat Walter from there 1 year ago today, and he's pretty much the best cat ever." - Aaron N.

Vanilla arrived as part of a shy litter of cattle dog mixes and struggled to adjust to shelter life. Staff, volunteers, and our trainer worked with him for months, taking him on outings which helped build his confidence. He graduated from a Basics & Manners class, but didn’t show well in his kennel and was often overlooked. When a volunteer began fostering him, Vanilla quickly proved how much he had to offer. He was housebroken, good with other dogs, and making steady progress with his reactivity. After nearly a year of waiting, a family gave him a chance, and Vanilla finally found his home.

"Our adopted dog Lou (renamed "Blue") is LOVING his life in the great wide outdoors. This morning Blue and his big brother took a long hike and found multiple elk bones in a big wide open space. He is the most fit and happy dog I have ever known. Great job for creating such a safe place for him to chill until I came and found him. Cheers!!" - Kelly H.

Roast Beef arrived at just 11 weeks old with a fractured femur that required amputation to relieve his pain. After surgery and a period of recovery, he quickly adapted and his playful personality began to shine. With the support of our medical team and dedicated volunteers, Roast Beef healed beautifully. He was soon adopted into a loving home, where he is now thriving and enjoying a happy, active life on three legs. This is a true testament to the second chances given at HSSPV.

Giving Activity

Mission

At the Humane Society of the South Platte Valley (HSSPV), we’re passionate about giving every animal in our community a chance at a happy, healthy life. We work to reduce pet overpopulation, provide life-saving care, and build strong, lasting bonds between people and animals. Our staff, volunteers, and partners come together every day to create a village of support for animals in need.

Background Statement

The Humane Society of the South Platte Valley (HSSPV) was founded in September 2009 to provide compassionate care and lifesaving services for animals in our community. With the generous support of the cities of Littleton and Englewood, the shelter officially opened its doors on December 24, 2009, creating a vital resource for pets and people across the South Metro area. In 2011, the City of Cherry Hills Village joined as a partner, further strengthening our ability to serve the Arapahoe County community.

Since opening, HSSPV has grown into more than just a shelter. We provide adoption services, behavioral support, and affordable veterinary care to help keep pets healthy and in loving homes. Our community programs offer accessible vaccines, microchips, and spay/neuter surgeries so that families can care for their pets responsibly and prevent unnecessary litters.

We believe that supporting pet owners is one of the best ways to help animals. By offering resources, education, and compassionate care, HSSPV works to strengthen the human-animal bond and ensure that pets remain safe, healthy, and loved in our community.
