GLOBAL's mission is to elongate life and dramatically improve health outcomes for the amazing people with Down syndrome we serve. We believe that people with Down syndrome can only achieve their true potential if they have good health.

Here are just a few a examples of what your support is empowering us to do:

  • Research: GLOBAL’s seed funding for the Crnic Institute and the Alzheimer’s & Cognition Center on the Anschutz Medical Campus has resulted in clinical trials and breakthrough research in inflammation and autoimmune disorders, regression disorder, growth hormone treatment, metabolism, cancer, cognition, Alzheimer’s, and more.
  • Medical Care: We have 20+ clinicians providing excellent medical care Monday through Friday to over 2,500 children with Down syndrome from 35 states and 11 countries at the Sie Center for Down Syndrome at Children’s Hospital Colorado. Our GLOBAL Adult Clinic at Denver Health is providing excellent and expanding care to hundreds of adults each year.
  • GLOBAL Medical Care Guidelines for Adults with Down Syndrome©: We created the first evidence-based clinical care guidelines for adults with Down syndrome that was published in the Journal of American Medical Association (JAMA). Since then, we have published a free family-friendly version with both versions now available in Spanish, Japanese, Italian, Swahili, and Albanian!
  • GLOBAL’s Lobbying and Advocacy: GLOBAL's leadership saw the creation of the first Down syndrome research program at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), called the INCLUDE Project. With your support, our DeOndra Dixon INCLUDE Project Act will make that program permanent! Our tireless advocacy has resulted in the NIH budget providing $440 million of NEW Down syndrome research over the last seven years. We are grateful to our Congressional champions, friends at NIH, and self-advocates.
  • Education: We established the GLOBAL Inclusive Program at Regis University which is the first post-secondary program at a Jesuit University for students with Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities. We also hosted our Cooking & Nutrition, Summer Fitness, and Summer Social programs providing participants with fun, engaging opportunities to learn healthy habits and stay active.

Background Statement

The birth of Anna and John J. Sie's granddaughter, Sophia (who is now twenty-two and a senior at Regis University!), was the inspiration and catalyst for establishing the Global Down Syndrome Foundation in 2009. At the time, there was virtually no specialty pediatric medical care or research for Down syndrome in Colorado or in surrounding states.

In addition, the Sie family experienced many disturbing situations around the diagnosis, healthcare, and education of their granddaughter. Based on these experiences, the Sie's established the Linda Crnic Institute for Down Syndrome (Crnic Institute) and its medical care arm, the Anna and John J. Sie Center for Down Syndrome at the Children's Hospital Colorado (Sie Center), and later the University of Colorado Alzheimer's and Cognition Center - all on the Anschutz Medical Campus.

GLOBAL is tasked with outreach and education that creates a pipeline of dedicated researchers, medical care patients, and informed government representatives. YOUR support helps us do this day in and day out and reminds us that we are making a difference and that we are appreciated.

THANK YOU for helping us create a brighter future for the awesome people with Down syndrome we serve!
