Food For Thought Denver

A nonprofit organization

It's a big lift but we're up for it. Feeding the entire student population over the weekend at just under 80 Denver-Area schools takes a lot of planning, effort and funding. One promise we can make to you is that 100% of your donations go directly to the purchase of food for our kids.

Food For Thought Denver's focus is to alleviate  weekend hunger for students in the Denver Metro area where 90% or more of the students qualify for free and reduced lunch programs. Our mission is clear: Feed kids. It's that simple.

Testimonials

"Dear Food For Thought Organization,
My name is _______. I am in 4th grade in Mr. Quarton's class at Ellis Elementary. Thank you so much for donating food to my school. I may not be able to get food every week. My favorite foods were the fruit, pizza, penguins, and the breakfast meal. Thank you again for the food and maybe I will get to meet you."

"After handing out power sacks for 8 months to the children and families in my preschool class I realize that without this food the children in my class would go hungry. I realized I am handing out much more than food. I'm handing out hope.... Through this one act of a power sack my families are able to be supported to not only have food in their cupboard, but supported by their community to find success in what they dream."

Abby Lawson, Early Childhood Educator

Mission

Food for Thought Denver strives to eliminate weekend hunger for children in the Denver area by providing food Powersacks, because we believe that no child should go hungry.

Background Statement

Two members of the Arvada Sunrise Rotary Club Foundation who had been involved in a similar "backpack" project in Arvada, Colorado founded the Food for Thought Denver program. Through their contact with the administrators of the Arvada Food Bank, they became aware of the acute nature of the weekend hunger problem for the children in Denver Public Schools and the fact that too little was being done to address the issue for this population of students.

After approaching principals at two DPS elementary schools, they learned that students were coming to school on Monday mornings with headaches, stomachaches, and unable to focus and learn due to hunger. At this point, Food For Thought began serving all of the students in these two schools.
