Discovery Learning Center's mission is to provide quality early childhood care and education in a supportive environment; that support extends to the children, the families and their community. The goal of everyone working with the children is to help each child have more positive feelings about him/herself, which includes confidence in the ability to learn, increasing self-control, positive social relationships and exploring new experiences, with the result of growing confident, competent, caring children.
Child Care Network's mission is to provide services and programs that make child care work for families and communities. Quality, availability, and affordability of child care are the three essential elements of a responsive and growing child care system.
Newborn Network's mission is to provide services and programs that support parents in the first years of their child's life. The two main goals are to enhance parent-to-parent networking and to assist parents in enhancing their child's development.
Discovery Center was established in 1978, as a laboratory setting for Colorado Northwestern Community College, and later Colorado Mountain College's Early Childhood Education Certificate and Associate Degree Program. The school was housed in a vacant parsonage in Old Town. In 1984, CMC decided to terminate that program. Parents of Discovery Center children then formed a non-profit corporation - Steamboat Springs Discovery Learning Center. Discovery first achieved and has maintained NAEYC Accreditation since 1990.
The Child Care Network was formed within this agency in 1992. In 1994, the Network also began to provide services to Grand and Jackson Counties, in 1995 to Moffat County, in 1996 to Rio Blanco County, and in 2017 we were able to focus again on our home county, Routt. In the fall of 1993, the DLC Board of Directors decided to move this organization towards a Family Development Center concept. And in 1994, the Newborn Network was added as a home visitation program, then transformed into a family support program partnering with Bright Beginnings. In 2005 we were able to add Parents as Teachers to our programming. In 2017, we added Play & Learn, a parent-child twice weekly year round program.
