FCMoD has a long history of acting on the philosophy that no one should be turned away due to inability to pay for admission or program fees. While many museums strive to reach underserved and at-risk populations, many never reach the level of success experienced through the museum's Opportunity Program. By extending no-cost memberships and daily admission passes to families experiencing low-income, the program breaks down barriers to promote museum access. The Opportunity Program serves as a mode to lessen the disparity in access to informal learning opportunities for those living in poverty. Relationships with Poudre School District and Thompson School District, seventeen local nonprofits, and academic institutions like Colorado State University help to identify participants who can benefit from access to museum experiences. FCMoD relies on support from foundations, corporations, and individual donors to continue to provide opportunities for all members of the community to experience the museum, regardless of socioeconomic status. Funds received will assist FCMoD in hosting life-changing experiences for low-income and at-risk populations that can inspire and foster learning for the next generation of creative problem solvers who can meet new challenges with innovation and ingenuity.
Conversations with social service agencies and school district leaders help to qualify the value of museum membership, admission, and programs through the sharing of personal stories. We collect messages of support and inspiration from visitors and the impacts made in the lives of participants from social service agencies. Anecdotally, we have been thanked for the ways in which this program has allowed families to begin to explore positive extracurricular activities, the ways in which youth and families now have the ability to be exposed to the arts and sciences previously prohibited due to cost, and the impact we have in assisting in provision of the tools that children need to succeed in life.
