Mission Statement

Elsewhere is a bridge between local culture and global communities. We provide a unique and fertile landscape that nurtures the artist and their process through focused time and space, so that they can transcend to new levels in their work, awareness, and lives.

Organization History

Since its birth in 2006, Elsewhere Studios has been a hub of creative community activities. The Artist Residency Program, the Paonia Community Garden, and the Art Wall Project are all successful programs that add much to the vibrancy of our community. This was accomplished on primarily volunteer time and energy - broad community support and much donated administrative time. In February 2014 a Board of Directors was formed, and in May Elsewhere Studios merged with The Coyote School, an established 501 (c) 3 organization. We are now operating as Coyote School DBA Elsewhere Studios. We have since been able to hire a part time Program Manager and part time Executive Director. We are still blessed by many volunteers.

Testimonials

"Elsewhere Studios is not only an incubator for creativity and unhindered expression but also the perfect place to unearth buried talents and unleash success. The combination of high quality people, invigorating energy, and breathtaking mountain views creates an elixir that can surely launch any artist into a brighter future" - Elyse Mische, Elsewhere Resident 2016

"There is the world we live in, with the stress, concern and obligation that often define our days and then there is Elsewhere, a truly otherworldly environment that carves out space for artists to create work that would not be possible otherwise. It's the sort of place that grounds down your toes, invites in the whimsical and inspires the imagination to soar." Siri Undlin, Elsewhere Resident 2016

"I have been to many art residencies around the world and Elsewhere is special. It is a sum greater than its parts. There is a sense of community and peace there. After a hard day's work of writing I liked to open the window at dusk and let the silence creep in and sooth my soul" Michael McLaughlin, Elsewhere Resident 2014

"Elsewhere is a magical, soul-renewing experience for an artist. It provides a safe haven, a space to explore, stretch, and renew." - Meredith Friedman, Elsewhere Resident 2012

"Elsewhere is a hub of activity, a gathering place for the art, music, and magic of Paonia, and it quickly works its way into your soul." Shay Lopez, Elsewhere Resident 2011

"I have seen Elsewhere grow from an idea to a flourishing destination for writers and artists who in turn share their craft with our community. We all have benefited " Karen Fogg -Paonia Writers Group

"The Elsewhere Studio Program has been invaluable in shaping my experience of Paonia, Colorado. The ongoing friendships and projects conceived and nurtured between Elsewhere residents and the community have made this a much richer and more dynamic small town, while giving those fortunate enough to be chosen lifelong memories and breakthroughs in their practice. Partially because of this fertile history, Paonia has become known throughout the Western Slope for its unique character and as a burgeoning Art Mecca. Elsewhere's revolving cast of visiting writers, musicians, visual artists, sculptors, videographers, and poets have fostered a cultural exchange, focus, vitality, and professionalism that plays a fundamental role in inspiring local people to engage on a deeper level with their own work, and with the Arts overall." Naropa Sabine, Artist
