The diversity of El Comité's clients is representative of Longmont's changing community. While some immigrants quickly assimilate, many of them, at one time or another, need an advocate who can help them overcome adversity, discrimination, or other barriers to success they may face. El Comité assists clients through case management, advocacy, and empowerment.

Mission

The Mission of El Comité is to facilitate communication and understanding within the community to improve social justice, education, and economic status for the Latino, Immigrant, and non-Latino members of the community.

Background Statement

On August 14, 1980, two teens were shot by the Police in Longmont. The city was outraged and no voices were heard louder in their demands for justice than that of the Hispanic community. El Comité was formed by the Latino people of Longmont. This grassroots effort was driven as a means to bring advocacy to Longmont's Latino population. Community leaders helped start a fund for the young men's family and organized a candlelit vigil and march to Longmont's City Council. The protesters arrived with 1000 names on a petition and let it be known that relations between the police and the public needed to be reformed. Latino community leaders began work with the Department of Justice to advocate for the rights of Latinos and improve community relations with local law enforcement and the community at large. El Comité de Longmont was incorporated on November 26, 1980.
