Mission Statement

Education Through Music-Colorado partners with under-resourced schools to provide music as a core subject for all children, and utilizes music education as a catalyst to improve academic achievement, motivation for school and self-confidence.

Organization History

Founded in 2018 with programs launched in 2019, ETM-Colorado makes music education a reality for thousands of children who would otherwise have little or no exposure to the arts. ETM-Colorado uses music instruction to strengthen students' ability to learn in all areas and works to build schools' capacity to sustain music programs.
ETM-Colorado bases our work off of Education Through Music-New York (ETM). Founded in NYC in 1991, ETM is one of the country's leading music education nonprofits. They have ensured that tens of thousands of K-8 students have access to high quality music education as a core subject and helped schools and school systems maintain those programs sustainably and independently. Thanks to continuous growth and proven academic success for their students over thirty years, ETM has been able to launch affiliates in Los Angeles, Colorado, and most recently, Massachusetts.

As a result of our partnership with ETM-CO, our program finally has a vision and direction rooted in rigorous, standards-aligned music with a priority on culturally responsive pedagogy. Our partnership has also provided our school with the financial flexibility to build the capacity of our music teacher with the support of a dedicated instructional music coach. I have seen first hand the impact music education from Education Through Music-Colorado has had on our students at Oakland Elementary. In my 10 years with Denver Public Schools, I have never seen students so engaged and excited about their music learning. We have students who ask if they can have extra time to work on their music projects and even offer to give up their recess time to do this. Education Through Music-Colorado uses innovative music strategies and technology to engage students on multiple levels. I have seen students who are not engaged with their academic learning come alive in their music classes. Seeing the impact of music education, our grade level classroom teachers have begun incorporating music in their classrooms. Across the building you will see music as an integral part of our learning community. Education through Music has changed what music looks like for our students.
