I became a member of EMAHS (JCHS) in 2002 when I began volunteering at the Hiwan Museum as an educator and docent. It wasn't until 2006, when I became the president of the organization, did I come to understand the impact this historical society has had on the Evergreen community since 1973.

"The Society" played a critical roll in saving the Hiwan Homestead as well as the land surrounding it. Members of "The Society" encouraged the newly established Jefferson County Open Space to purchase the beautiful and historic log structure known as the Hiwan Homestead. A few years later in 1976 the Evergreen Community bought the land, "The Grove", around the Hiwan Museum to save it from development into condominiums and gave it to "The Society" as a 501c3 to manage and to continue to preserve and protect our community's history. In the late 1990s, "The Society" was given one of the few remaining one-room school houses in Jefferson County. With a phenomenal amount of effort by our members, the school was restored to it's original condition and has been used for the past 12 years for our "Medlen School Program".

Being a former history teacher, I still volunteer as a teacher in the programs and just delight in seeing children really enjoy our history programs. I certainly believe this is one of the finest organizations I have been fortunate to be a part of in my many years of volunteerism.
