Food Bank

Children and Youth (infants - 19 years.)
Families
General Public
Poor/Economically Disadvantaged

Description

EChO's food bank provides food for families and individuals in need. Shopping at the food bank is not designed as a means to supply all of an individual's food needs, but rather to supplement food purchased through food assistance or cash purchases. Our food bank provides clients with non-perishable items, such as canned goods, cereals, pasta, meal helpers, baby food, pet food, personal care items, cleaning supplies, and paper goods. Perishable items, such as fresh produce, dairy products, meats, and bakery items are also available. Since our food bank relies heavily on the donations received from local grocery stores, businesses, individual and church donations, our selections will vary depending on the generosity of our donors. Designated funds and donations provide us with the means to purchase additional needed items.

EChO utilizes a "client choice" model for our food bank. Clients may shop weekly and select food items based on their individual needs and preferences. Guidelines determine the amount of food, based on household size and types of food - based on the "nutritional plate" format. We are proud of our unique model for food distribution which enhances client dignity and empowers them to make healthy food choices for their families. Each month we receive approximately 22,738 pounds in donated food items that is then distributed directly to our clients. On an average, we are serving approximately 435 unique households per month, and our food bank averages approximately 735 visits per month.

Evidence of Program's Success

Client's express gratitude for the food we offer and the significant positive impact this program has on their monthly budgets. As clients become more self sufficient their need for visits to the food bank diminish. Moving clients from an "active status" to "inactive" reinforces our success as clients are now former clients and not needing our services.
