Testimonials

  • “Wow, was it ever a delight to stumble across the Durango Botanic Gardens while I was visiting Durango this week. As a Master Gardener from Virginia, I was stopped in my tracks as I wandered through the gardens. They are so well designed and interpreted and I loved the diversity of the mini-ecosystems the gardens create. That it is so well integrated with the library gives it even more importance as a community resource.”
  • "Beautiful little spot behind the library on the River Walk. Great to see native plants cultivated in a place for all to see and learn about"
  • "Really enjoyed it! :)"
  • "Cool little garden space tucked away behind a huge library! Randomly stumbled across this while walking along one of the many smoothly paved walking paths Durango has to offer. Very well maintained with surprisingly many botanical for this elevation and climate.

Mission

Our mission is to create public gardens that demonstrate best practices, advance horticultural education, and celebrate the inspirational power of sustainable gardens.

Background Statement

The Durango Botanic Gardens are an award-winning public garden dedicated to advancing best horticultural practice while also offering a peaceful, beautiful retreat for thousands of people. Located between the heavily used Animas River Trail and the Durango Public Library, the Gardens are a favorite for both locals and out of town visitors.

Be sure to visit our newest garden, the Literary Garden, near the West entrance to the library. The Literary Garden demonstrates--through plant selection and a website dedicated entirely to this new garden--how nature and gardens have influenced and informed many of our favorite authors and books.

As an all-volunteer non-profit, we depend entirely on programs like Colorado Gives for the purchase of plants, trees, mulch, seeds, and much, much more. Your donation to Colorado Gives, naming us as a beneficiary will keep this garden oasis in the middle of Durango beautiful and free to everyone to enjoy.
