What We Do: In nearly 50 years, Disability Law Colorado has made a significant difference in protecting the civil rights of Coloradans with disabilities:

  • Community-based services: We help Coloradans with disabilities access services and advocate for themselves.
  • Educational advocacy: We ensure that students with disabilities get the accommodations they need for free, quality education.
  • Employment support: We promote vocational training and help Coloradans with disabilities overcome employment barriers so they can secure meaningful jobs, achieve greater independence, and contribute their skills to their communities.
  • Affordable housing: We confront housing discrimination and fight for accessible, affordable options so that Coloradans have a safe place to live.
  • Facility monitoring: We work to ensure that people in residential treatment facilities receive proper care by regularly inspecting these locations, reviewing their practices, and addressing any issues of mistreatment, neglect, or inadequate services.
  • People in the criminal justice system: Our investigators routinely visit correctional facilities and interact with inmates with disabilities to ensure they receive fair treatment, accommodations and other necessary resources.
  • Guardianship: We assist people with disabilities in modifying or terminating guardianships, providing legal support and self-advocacy resources for independence.

Mission

Disability Law Colorado strives to ensure that Coloradans with disabilities have equal opportunities, can live independently and with dignity, and are empowered to advocate for themselves. We provide free legal services and resources to individuals whose rights have been violated — empowering them to navigate complex systems and dismantle barriers.

By addressing challenges in education, housing, employment, health care, transportation, and health and justice facilities, we protect the rights of people with disabilities, help them live healthier, more secure lives, and promote full participation in their communities.

Background Statement

For nearly 50 years, DLC has defended the rights and promoted the independence of Coloradans with disabilities. Each year, our advocates respond to thousands of requests for help — fighting discrimination, advancing inclusion, pursuing systemic change through class action lawsuits, and shaping policies that protect every person’s right to live, work, and thrive.

But this mission is now at risk. The federal administration is proposing to cut our funding nearly in half — an existential threat not just to DLC, but to the one million Coloradans with disabilities who depend on these protections.
