Cool Science

Cool Science is all about making science "cool" and fun- just like sports, music or art. We're dedicated to exposing, exciting, and inspiring Coloradans- kids, parents and teachers- about the wonders of science in the everyday world around us.

Description

In addition to the programs we do in schools, libraries, museums and other venues, as well as the other special events where we participate, Cool Science has always presented our own free hands-on science events each year, open to the public. The Colorado Springs Cool Science Festival is our largest and most popular such event. It began in 2009 as a one day carnival at UCCS that attracted several hundred kids, parents and teachers, and has since grown to an 8 day festival with dozens of events for all ages taking place in and around Colorado Springs and attracting over 15,000 participants. As always, it kicks off with the Cool Science Carnival for Kids at UCCS with nearly 100 shows, lab tours and hands-on activity stations provided by dozens of local businesses, non-profits, clubs, schools and other organizations.

Evidence of Program's Success

The best indication of the success of this program has been its phenomenal growth over the years. In 2010 the carnival day and festival overall attracted about 1,000 people. Now we routinely attract more than 5,000 for the carnival day and 15,000 overall, with nearly 100 organizations from throughout the state participating.

Description

Cool Science provides live, interactive science demonstration shows for your class, school, home-school group, scout troop, library, museum or other organization. Our demonstrations cover a wide variety of topics, and are presented by real scientists, engineers, college professors and their students from the local community. Topics include: chemistry; electricity & magnetism; light & optics; heat & combustion; super cold science; water; gasses & air pressure; gyroscopic motion; sound & waves; states of matter; and 3-D technology. We can also customize these presentations to compliment classroom studies or special events.
We can also combine multiple demonstration shows along with other hands-on activities to create our "Day of Science", where we literally take over an entire school for the full day and turn it into a hands-on science center for the students!
Check out a cool video profile of one of our demonstration shows here: http://www.hdnetmovies.com/blogs/cool-science/

Hands-on Science Activity Tables

Class

Education

Beneficiaries

Children and Youth (infants - 19 years)
Families
Teachers

Description

Cool Science often visits local libraries, zoos, museums, festivals, and parent/student Science and STEM nights to present fun and engaging hands-on science activity tables. We set up several activities with a common scientific theme (such as electric charges or the science of sound), and kids can spend as little or as much time as they desire, depending on their own personal level of interest.
Activity tables are a great venue for interacting with budding young scientists one on one. The child- or their parents- can ask any question they like, and we are able to explain the concepts at the appropriate level.
