Cool Science

Cool Science is all about making science "cool" and fun- just like sports, music or art. We're dedicated to exposing, exciting, and inspiring Coloradans- kids, parents and teachers- about the wonders of science in the everyday world around us. Our passionate volunteers- mostly real scientists, engineers and educators- bring a wide array of fun and thought-provoking hands-on science programs to schools. libraries, museums and other venues throughout eastern Colorado.

Beneficiaries

Children and Youth (infants - 19 years)

Description

Cool Science provides live, interactive science demonstration shows for your class, school, home-school group, scout troop, library, museum or other organization. Our demonstrations cover a wide variety of topics, and are presented by real scientists, engineers, college professors and their students from the local community. Topics include: chemistry; electricity & magnetism; light & optics; heat & combustion; super cold science; water; gasses & air pressure; gyroscopic motion; sound & waves; states of matter; and 3-D technology. We can also customize these presentations to compliment classroom studies or special events.
We can also combine multiple demonstration shows along with other hands-on activities to create our "Day of Science", where we literally take over an entire school for the full day and turn it into a hands-on science center for the students!

Hands-on Science Activity Tables

Beneficiaries

Children and Youth (infants - 19 years)

Description

Cool Science often visits local libraries, zoos, museums, festivals, and parent/student Science and STEM nights to present fun and engaging hands-on science activity tables. We set up several activities with a common scientific theme (such as electric charges or the science of sound), and kids can spend as little or as much time as they desire, depending on their own personal level of interest.
Activity tables are a great venue for interacting with budding young scientists one on one. The child- or their parents- can ask any question they like, and we are able to explain the concepts at the appropriate level.

General Public

Description

In addition to the programs we do in schools, libraries, museums and other venues, as well as the other special events where we participate, Cool Science has always presented our own free hands-on science carnival events each year, open to the public. At first we simply partnered with Colorado College Cool Science Club students in the spring to produce fairly small events. Then in 2008 we began inviting selected organizations from the local community to participate, and the event began to grow dramatically in size and popularity.
Now our Big Cool Science Festival at Colorado College each April attracts thousands. Kids, teachers and families enjoy more than 60 fun and engaging hands-on science activity stations, live demonstration shows and performances presented by Cool Science as well as dozens of different companies, universities, businesses, professional societies, clubs, museums, schools, nonprofits and other organizations from throughout the state. Thanks to a few generous sponsors we are able to keep this huge event free for all.

Evidence of Program's Success

The best indication of the success of this program has been its phenomenal growth over the years. In 2012 the carnival at CC attracted about 600 kids, which was twice as many as the year before. Now we routinely get over 4,000 kids, with over 60 organizations from throughout the state participating.
