Testimonials

"Columbine was a momentous event in the history of the country… Even in the midst of tragedy we've seen the best, the best there is to see about our nation and about human nature." (President Bill Clinton at Memorial groundbreaking)

"I hope people come here to this place to think about how they themselves can be better people rather than come here to reflect on death." (Columbine Parent) from Columbine Memorial Wall of Healing

The Columbine Memorial, opened in 2007, serves as a tranquil and beautiful tribute to the lives lost and the survivors of the massacre.

Mission

Through the preservation and improvement of the Columbine Memorial, the Foundation will continue the remembrance of those who died, support those who were injured, and honor all those affected by the shootings at Columbine High School 20 April 1999.

Background Statement

On April 20, 1999 twelve students and one teacher lost their lives at Columbine High School in an attack that, at the time, was the deadliest high school shooting in US history. Many more were injured and thousands were emotionally scarred. The Columbine Memorial was built to honor and remember the innocent victims of this tragedy.

Families of the victims, students, faculty, and community members all expressed a desire for the creation of a permanent memorial. The Columbine Memorial Committee was formed shortly after the shootings, with the primary goal to develop an appropriate and respectful Memorial design. Many people within, and outside of, the Columbine community were interested in funding and completing a permanent memorial to make sure that innocent victims who died, were injured, or otherwise endured the Columbine tragedy were not forgotten. The Memorial was built in Clement Park, adjacent to Columbine High School, and is a place for all to honor and respect those touched by this tragedy.

The Columbine Memorial Foundation, Inc., a non-profit organization, was formed in March 2009 after the Columbine Memorial Committee completed construction and dedicated the Memorial. The Columbine Memorial Foundation's purpose is to augment and facilitate maintenance, repairs and improvements to the Columbine Memorial. The Foundation also coordinates volunteer efforts throughout the year to perform trash removal, weeding, plant maintenance and general cleaning of the Memorial.
