Colorado Preservation, Inc. promotes historic preservation statewide by providing advocacy, education, outreach & preservation services to all communities and individuals.
Colorado Preservation, Inc. (CPI) was founded in 1984 by a group of Coloradans determined to protect the state’s rich architectural and cultural heritage. What began as a grassroots movement has grown into the leading nonprofit for historic preservation in Colorado—advancing education, policy, and hands-on projects that safeguard the places shaping our shared story.
Over four decades, CPI has achieved landmark successes:
1985: Launched the Saving Places® Conference, now the largest statewide preservation conference in the nation.
1986: Championed the State Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credit, reauthorized and expanded through CPI’s continued advocacy.
1988: Established the Dana Crawford Awards, celebrating outstanding preservation achievements across Colorado.
1997: Created the Endangered Places Program, which has helped protect 130 threatened sites and earned national recognition for community impact.
Today, CPI’s dedicated staff and board work statewide to keep Colorado’s heritage alive and relevant—revitalizing communities, honoring diverse histories, and fostering sustainability through preservation.
Our vision is an inclusive future that values every story and every place. We are committed to elevating underrepresented voices, protecting historic landscapes and cultural landmarks, and ensuring that Colorado’s past continues to shape its future.
