Colorado Lions Camp

A nonprofit organization

Colorado Lions Camp is a year-round facility that aims to create a unique experience for each individual who attends. Serving over 175 individuals with a wide range of disabilities, our programs are tailored to meet the needs of every single one of our campers. With a variety of programs and themes, we have something for everyone.

We offer a variety of activities such as Sports and Games, Nature, Challenge Course, Arts and Crafts, and more! A key part of our program is our Campers' Choice, activity blocks where campers are given the option of what activity they would like to participate in. This gives our campers the ability to make the week what they want it to be, while also participating in high-quality programs led by our staff.

At our camp, campers create friendships that last well beyond their session. For them and for us, camp is a place to grow, learn, and explore.

Mission

The mission of the Colorado Lions Camp is to provide exceptional camping programs to individuals with disabilities which promote independence, challenge their abilities and provide an opportunity to discover their own potential in a safe, positive environment.

Background Statement

In 1964, the very first session of the Colorado Lions Camp was run using a Lions member's cabin in Steamboat Springs; the program was sponsored by the Lions Clubs of Colorado. Five girls who had visual impairments attended the week of camp; their enjoyment of the program led Lions across the state to purchase the current location of the Colorado Lions Camp. At the 1968 Colorado Lions State Convention, members voted to build a permanent camp in the Pike National Forest.

In 1969, the Lions Camp hosted its first summer of residential camp. That summer, 9 campers who were visually impaired attended. These campers slept in tents in what is now our sports field and cooked their meals over a fire. As the years passed, the camp developed into what it looks like today, building a main lodge, cabins, and program buildings. Now over 350 campers with a variety of disabilities attended our Summer and Respite Programs throughout the year.
