Background Statement
Colorado Horsecare Foodbank was formed in 2009 when a small group of horse-loving friends recognized that dozens of Colorado horse owners were facing financial crises arising from the recession that began in 2008. The group arrived at the innovative solution of providing food while keeping the horses with their families, rather than relinquishing them. Sadly, many of our horse rescues are filled with animals that have been placed there by law enforcement after suffering abuse or starvation that could have been avoided with assistance from CHF. We believe our approach complements the mission of horse rescue operations.
CHF is careful to ensure that assistance is provided to safe and caring homes. We thoroughly research the environment of each of the families receiving aid. Our application process is fairly rigorous. We believe in protecting our resources and respecting our supporters, and this can only be accomplished by maintaining a high level of scrutiny of our applicants.
Monies or hay purchases, and to a lesser degree administrative expenses are raised through several annual fundraisers:
Our Flowers for Food event is the original fundraiser that was critical to giving the Foodbank its start. This is our springtime plant sale. We raise lovely annuals from seedlings in our two greenhouses. In early spring, we fill planters and window boxes with mountain-grown flowers that will add beauty to any home throughout the summer.
Our fall fundraising event-Hay Bales & Horse Tales-offers a delicious barbecue dinner and incredible silent auction. This event, now in its sixth year, will be held at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds Exhibit Halls. Patrons enjoy great food, music, and the company of other horse-lovers, while having an opportunity to bid on donated services and works of art from the community.
Our newest fundraiser is "Take a Ride on the Wild Side," a fun-filled, authentic, working cattle ranch ride through 10,000 gorgeous acres of land on the Colorado Cattle Company Ranch in New Raymer, Colorado. Besides being in the great outdoors, you won't find better food or more charming accommodations. This event traditionally sells out quickly and it is one of our favorites as well.
