Background Statement
We ask that Colorado’s community continue to support the valuable work that CBHC is doing and its ambitious plans to deliver for Black residents in the upcoming years.
Youth Sports
CBHC’s Sports-Based Youth Mental Health Wellness Program focuses on catalyzing and sustaining change for Colorado's Black youth through incorporated mental health programming and group therapeutic services through sports-driven initiatives.
Students will participate in a 7-week program that addresses mental health disparities, including trauma related to culture, social determinants of health, barriers, and systems through specialized theories and frameworks. These tools and skills will then be utilized in a series of sports-centered practices to help students implement the learned coping mechanisms on the field, court, track, etc. The program is set to launch during the first quarter of 2024.
Maternal Mental Health
Launched in early 2023, CBHC has worked to advocate for the voice of Black maternal mothers who are unaware of the mental health disparities that exist before, during, and post-pregnancy. CBHC will be moving into Phase II of the program, aiming to educate, advocate, and provide resources through community initiatives for mothers, partners, family, and friends. CBHC is also taking steps that will lead to a change within local healthcare systems that promote integrated care, shared decision-making, and applied emphasis on Black women.
Black Barbershops & Salons
Launched in 2012, CBHC has partnered with more than 14 Black-owned barbershops and hair salons in the Denver/Aurora corridor to conduct cardiovascular and glucose screenings, provide heart disease education and resources and referrals to over 3,000 individuals while also training over 60 dedicated CBHC staff/volunteers to assist with the program. CBHC has completed 800 blood pressure screenings in 2022, bringing the total to 9,500 since the program began.
Health Resource Directory
CBHC’s popular Health Resource Directory is a widespread compilation of health-related resources, articles, and a listing of Black physicians, specialists, and medical providers in the Denver, Aurora, and Colorado Springs areas. CBHC is seeking funding for the bi-annual Directory’s next edition, which has become a mainstay in Colorado’s Black community, serving as a valuable tool for eliminating health disparities and increasing health awareness.
