Our Work

Catholic Charities offers services to help the most vulnerable in our community find hope and stability.  We focus on stopping homelessness before it happens through prevention and diversion.  However, anyone can access our services which include nutrition, housing, jobs, literacy, health, immigration, and more.  Together, we can make a difference in our communities.  As an agency, we continually add and redesign programs to meet the evolving needs of those we serve.  By developing staff, tracking current trends, working inter-departmentally, and collaborating with other agencies, we are in a better position to develop programs and raise the capacity to fill gaps in our community.

JORGE'S STORY - Help with Employment and Nutrition

Jorge and his mother, Abby, were living a comfortable life until COVID struck.  His employer closed his business leaving Jorge unemployed.  When his mother had a stroke, he didn’t know what to do next.  With no income coming in, and not knowing what care his mother would need, he moved their belongings to storage and began living in his car to save money.   When his mother was released from the hospital, they moved to a motel until funds ran low, then back to his car.   At one point he was unable to make his car payment and the thought of losing his vehicle took on a whole new meaning now that it served as their home.  With so much uncertainty, Abby asked him to go to Catholic Charities for help.

Jorge began working with a case manager and visiting Catholic Charities Hanifen Employment Center daily to learn new skills and search for employment.  He and his mom also began eating at the Marian House Kitchen.  He found several jobs, but as his mother's primary caregiver was unable to accept them.  Then a friend invited Jorge and his mother to stay with her for three months.  This gave Jorge time to refocus on his job search.  He found a new job, began saving money, and found a new place to live.  Jorge was ready to get his life back.  As for his mom, having a safe place to stay and not worrying about finances for a brief time helped her heal.  Jorge now has hope for a better future.  He is thankful his friend reached out in their time of need, and the team at Catholic Charities never stopped believing in him.

ISABEL'S STORY - Help With Employment, Housing, Nutrition, Baby Needs, Utilities, and Transportation

Isabel was pregnant with her second child and struggling.  Her relationship ended with her children’s father and due to complications from her pregnancy, she lost both her jobs.  Now, a single mom of two children with no child support or help, she began working part-time, cleaning office buildings, to try to keep her family stable.

The children's father’s unexpected departure and her job losses left her with an apartment rental commitment she could no longer afford.  She had no transportation, limiting her options for improving her income, and she fell behind on her rent and utility bills.  She found limited assistance from several area agencies, but it was not enough. Then she found Catholic Charities.

Through the Colorado Emergency Rental Assistance program – a government program implemented during COVID to keep people from losing their homes - Catholic Charities assisted Isabel with rent and utilities.  Her case manager helped her register for SNAP benefits to access food, diapers, and formula, and referred her to the Douglas County Cares Program for assistance in finding an affordable apartment.  She also received a car through Catholic Charities’ vehicle donation program, expanding her options for better employment, and giving her the ability to shop for groceries, get to doctors’ appointments, and do other tasks she could not easily do before.  With immediate concerns resolved, Isabel secured a second job, giving her family a secondary source of income.

She continues to work toward stability.  Isabel said, “If I didn’t have Catholic Charities, I don’t know where we would be.  I am so grateful.”
