Background Statement

On a sunny day in 1991 Castle Rock residents were surprised to see Lionel Oberlin picketing in front of two venerable downtown buildings. The historic structures were scheduled for demolition that day and Oberlin was protesting the loss of important historical landmarks. By the end of the day the buildings were gone and the Castle Rock Historical Society was formed in reaction to the destruction. The goal is to preserve and celebrate Castle Rock history. CRHS serves all Castle Rock residents with programs such as a museum, city tours, and events. The CRHS Board is a hard-working group, the organization is on solid financial ground with $10k in reserves and annual operational funding from the Town of Castle Rock's P.S. Miller Cultural Fund. Issues of preservation grow more acute over time as old buildings are destroyed to make way for new development.
