Colorado Horse Rescue

We need your help to save viable horses in the community from dangerous or disadvantaged situations as well as provide solutions for horse owners in need. Each week, healthy horses are sold at the local livestock auction to meat buyers for slaughter. There is a solution for these deserving animals.

Mission Statement

We are Colorado Horse Rescue, and we are building a better future for horses. We see it. We believe in it. And we are here to make it happen. As a 501(c)(3) impact organization operating in Colorado since 1986, we work to continuously reimagine what's possible and create a reality where safe solutions exist for every horse.

Organization History

Colorado Horse Rescue (CHR) is an impact organization providing education, care, rehabilitation, and adoption services for horses in vulnerable and sometimes desperate circumstances. Founded in 1986, CHR began as "Safe Homes" when area stables and farms offered vacancies to help rescued horses. In 1988, Colorado Horse Rescue was officially named and established as a federal tax-exempt 501(c) 3 not-for-profit corporation. In 2001, CHR moved to its current 50-acre property in Longmont, CO which is owned outright. In 2011, CHR was accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries. Today we maintain a Platinum GuideStar rating and are honored for the second year in a row with a Top-Rated Award from Great Nonprofits.

In the last year, we achieved one of our greatest accomplishments when the Right Horse Initiative identified CHR as an official Right Horse Partner. The Right Horse Initiative is funded by the WaterShed Animal Fund, a division of the Arnall Family Foundation, and is dedicated to massively increasing the number of successful horse adoptions in the United States. We are now part of a collective of horse industry professionals and equine welfare advocates leading the industry toward positive solutions through collaboration, education, training, and public awareness on a national level. We are pioneering innovative processes and programs, as well as upholding the highest standards for care. We are reframing equine adoption and the fate of horses in transition.

In 2018, Colorado Horse Rescue was also honored locally by the Boulder County Horse Association as the sole recipient of their Annual Achievement Award for our contribution to the equestrian community of Boulder County. We were recognized for the exceptional educational opportunities we offer to the community that support both people and horses in need as well as delivering valuable service to horses in Colorado. Sara Martinelli, President of Boulder County Horse Association stated, "The endless work and effort that you put into your mission at CHR is both inspirational and highly valued."

Daily, we operate at capacity, providing for the continuous care and rehabilitation of 60 horses rescued from vulnerable situations. In addition, we serve another 10-20 horses thriving in foster homes. Equines are accepted to CHR, either through owner surrender, the impound process (judicial system), or field rescue (horses are removed from situations like livestock auctions where the majority of horses are purchased for slaughter). Once a horse enters our gates, he or she is given a thorough health and training evaluation and an individualized plan is executed to ensure optimal health and develop the manners needed for a 1,200-pound animal to secure a loving home.

Testimonials

"I LOVE this place!! I was going to foster a horse that I met at one of their open houses, but fell in love and eventually adopted. They cared enough about my horse to insist she stay put until she was healthy enough to leave per their specifications. In the interim, I was there every day getting to know my beautiful new horse and got to watch them in action. Their volunteers take the time to greet each horse individually and know their special needs/requests. The staff there are fully aware of each of their horses under their care and how best to keep them safe and healthy or restored to health. The adoption steps were what I would expect from a place that really cares about placements. They didn't charge me enough for my horse who I believe is the most perfect in the world, but I won't argue with that! Once she passes, some of my horse budget will be heading their direction. I believe in them so much. It definitely takes money to care for so many and to review and keep track of paperwork and visit locations of potential new owners." ~Adopted Mandy

"It was such a pleasure to see the horses in the care of very talented staff and crew who manage and train the horse, The horses get excellent care here and the team works with you so that they match you to the right horse. I want to thank Colorado Horse Rescue all for the wonderful work they do for every horse that they have brought to them. This is a Wonderful organization and what a pleasure to see and meet the staff! It is like they are angels to the horse world." ~ Adopted Carousel

"I am so grateful to have found this place! I have been a volunteer for the last 9 months and genuinely look forward to my weekly visits every Saturday morning. The staff is kind, dedicated, and knowledgeable - I am so impressed with the high-quality care and attention they give to each horse. I've been involved with horses since I was a kid, and was a horse owner for 18 years. I am blown away at the staff's thoughtfulness, dedication to quality of life, love for the horses, and their kindness & gratitude for all the volunteers. The facility itself is always well maintained, safe, and welcoming. The positive attitude changes I've seen in the horses who arrive from all walks of life - livestock auctions included - are obvious. Many arrive nervous, wary of humans, and keep to themselves or are very standoffish. Thanks to the gentle care from the staff and volunteers, every single horse I've seen come from auction emerges from their shell, develops a more gentle and playful personality, and you can sense their contentedness. CHR is truly a magical place that deserves all the recognition in the world. They take such amazing care of the horses, and it shows! I am deeply appreciative for their services and for allowing me to spend time at this beautiful facility with these wonderful animals." ~Rebecca, Volunteer

"I have been involved with CHR in a variety of ways: as a foster home for young horses in need of training, as a hoof care practitioner, and as an onsite volunteer trainer. I'm impressed with the professionalism that this organization has. They do an amazing job helping as many horses as they can by evaluating them, training them, and finding appropriate forever homes for them." ~Silja, Volunteer

"CHR's stated mission is to Honor, Advocate, Protect, and Educate. I have seen the CHR team put all of these into sincere action. As an attendee of clinics and educational events, I value the on-target topics and excellent instructors pulled from the high-quality CHR network. I've learned so much about not only the 'how's and 'what's but also the 'why's of natural horse care and training. As a volunteer, I love the people, facilities, opportunities for growth and learning, the culture of hard work, and the effort put into setting volunteers up for success. On a weekly basis, I feel confident that my work and time are directly making a difference to the CHR herd. As a financial supporter, I've seen my donations used with integrity and priority. The passion and care put into each horse that sets hoof onto the property is inspiring and humbling. At the same time, the staff has also demonstrated the ability to make hard decisions and use resources as thoughtfully and efficiently as possible to best support CHR's mission. I believe in this organization and am grateful for its contributions to the Colorado community. Thanks, CHR!" ~Lynn, Donor, Clinic Attendee, and Volunteer

"My relationship with CHR began 7 years ago when I started sponsoring two horses. It was something my granddaughter and I could enjoy together. After that, I was hooked.....and when I retired last year I began volunteering (as well as keeping up my sponsorships). I started with one shift, added a second, and fill in whenever they are shorthanded and I am available - long story short, I cannot stay away.
The facility is excellent, and the love and care given to each and every horse is outstanding. I cannot say enough about how wonderful the staff and all the volunteers are!"
~Sharon, Donor and Volunteer

"When life dealt my parents a bad hand, Colorado Horse Rescue was right there to help and we are still so grateful. We can't say enough good things about this rescue and the people who work and volunteer there. Truly angels on earth." ~Client Served
