BRECK FILM CELEBRATED ITS 43r ANNIVERSARY AT THE FALL FESTIVAL ON SEPTEMBER 21-24, 2023

Over the past 43 years, Breckenridge Festival of Film evolved into Breck Film, with a mission to educate, entertain, and inspire year-round. 2019-2023 can only be defined as a growth spurt for Breck Film as the organization restructured internally, shifted leadership, and took over operations at a local art-house theater: The Eclipse. After four decades, Breck Film has a home of its own.

For us, film serves as a foundation for community; a way to bring people together from different demographics and belief systems.
Breck Film Fest is ranked as a USA Today Top 20 Film Festival and continually hits the Top 100 Film Festival list on the FilmFreeway submissions platform. It presents 100+ films in four days with 30+ filmmakers in attendance to engage with audiences, including interfacing with local media professionals. Partnerships with major studios bring high-caliber films and industry guests to Breckenridge throughout the year.

Testimonials

"It is obvious from this wonderful experience that those in charge of [Breck Film Fest] are passionate about film, and about the people who make them. Their hard work and attention to detail have really paid off. We are singing the praises of the festival and the wonderful people we met everywhere we go." -- Kiki Wilson, "Robert Shaw: Man of Many Voices"

"Just saw Stuck at the Breckenridge Film Festival in Colorado and I have to say it's easily one of my new favorite movies. I was worried it was gonna be a little froofy cause it's a musical, but it wound up being powerful, emotional, and hysterical. It never bothered me that they broke into song. The music was incredible, a blend of a whole bunch of styles so that each of the main characters had a unique voice. It was a simple enough premise: six strangers stuck on a NYC subway - but I feel like I really got to know these characters and can't stop thinking about what's gonna happen to them now. Though I related to just about everyone in the film, even if you don't, the story is so universal you're bound to identify with one of the characters. I'm never gonna look at a stranger the same way again." - IMDB User, pmarkey from Chicago

"Q&A after the film is always a treat. That gives us a debrief time that offers further understandings and sharing of views. Consider doing more of them. We are second homeowners that thank you for doing terrific work that brings joy to our hearts."

"As a local filmmaker myself, it was nice to talk with industry professionals and be able to network with them. My favorite part by far was the Behind the Scenes Animation presentation for Beauty & the Beast. It was an incredible opportunity to be able to listen to the original animators. Childhood dream come true. I also really enjoyed volunteering for the festival and being able to have the opportunities that I did." - Stephanie Jacques

Mission

MISSION: Breck Film curates unique, year-round film experiences that entertain and enrich the lives in our mountain community.

Background Statement

Since its opening event in 1981, Breck Film has celebrated the art of filmmaking. In a spectacular setting 9,600 feet above sea level, the flagship festival takes place in the authentic mountain town of Breckenridge. Each fall, the festival celebrates vibrant fall color intertwined with spirited personalities and storytelling in one of the best towns in the USA.

Breck Film Fest is one of the oldest film festivals in the country. At its annual flagship event, Breck Film serves thousands of guests and engages 250+ volunteers. New year-round programming expands that reach through a monthly Breck Film Society, Eclipse Theater, Winter Film Series, and various partner programs.

Breck Film is a 501(c)(3), private, non-profit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors and small staff. Funding for the Festival comes from local public and private grants, sponsorships, fundraising events, individual contributions, in-kind assistance, and revenue from tickets and merchandise.

Industry guests from acclaimed outlets such as Pixar, Disney, ReFramed Pictures (Susan Sarandon-operated production company), Laika Entertainment, and more are festival programming highlights. Recently, the festival hosted guests such as Michael Shannon (Shape of Water), Mira Sorvino (Mighty Aphrodite) and Matthew Glave (The Wedding Singer). The festival strives to connect audiences to film and filmmakers, advancing the art of storytelling and all that goes along with it: composing, music and sound; cinematography; the business of filmmaking/production; directing; and so much more.

Our High School Program engages students across the country in a partner program that has caught the attention of the Colorado Film Office. Selected filmmakers are invited to show their films theatrically at the festival with a feedback luncheon with professional filmmakers. It complements the long-running Children's Program, which introduces young children to film with hands-on activities.

Breck Film's rich history includes guests such as Alan Arkin, James Earl Jones, Robert Loggia, Marsha Mason, Sydney Pollack, Mary Steenburgen, Donald Sutherland, Eva Marie Saint, Jon Voight, Lou Diamond Phillips, Jon Favreau, Michael York , Jo Beth Williams, Connie Nielsen, Irvin Kershner, Thomas Haden Church, AnnaSophia Robb and DB Sweeney. A past partnership with the University of Colorado at Boulder presented classic and foreign films with faculty members leading interrelated discussions.
