Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra

For 60 years we have relied on the generosity of our community to make music happen-on stage at Macky, in schools, libraries, open spaces, and more. Every contribution from our audience members makes an impact you can hear. A donation in support of our 60th Anniversary will ensure that Boulder County's cultural gem will continue to thrive.

Mission Statement

Our mission is to infuse the Boulder region's artistic and educational cultures with the entertaining and inspiring power of orchestral music, played with excellence.

Organization History

The Boulder Philharmonic Orchestra has successfully established itself as one of only two all-professional symphony orchestras in the Denver metro and one of only a handful in the state of Colorado. Originally founded in 1957 as a spirited community orchestra, by 1972 the growing organization had sought out Oswald Lehnert as Music Director. During his tenure the Boulder Phil adopted Macky Auditorium as its permanent performance venue, hired a professional manager, and inaugurated the annual "Nutcracker" series in collaboration with the Boulder Ballet. In 1996, Theodore Kuchar took over the podium, and under his leadership the orchestra became fully professional. Current Music Director Michael Butterman joined the Boulder Phil in 2006, bringing a strong emphasis on education and outreach as well as a creative and engaging approach to programming to the organization. Over a number of seasons, he has developed collaborative relationships with other eminent local ensembles, including the Takács Quartet, Ars Nova Singers, and the Boulder Chorale.

Testimonials

"Opening nights are always exciting, but I must say that this was one of the finest performances, if not the finest, that I have ever heard the Boulder Philharmonic give. The entire performance was full of an emotion and accuracy that is rare even for this superb orchestra." ~OpusColorado.com, 9/16/12
