Mobile Community Services - Laundry Truck and Shower Truck

Class

Human Services

Beneficiaries

Alcohol, Drug, Substance Abusers
Disabled
Homeless
Unemployed, Underemployed

Description

Maintaining positive hygiene is critical for many individuals who are attempting to emerge from homelessness or extreme poverty. The stereotype of the homeless individual includes many misconceptions that are often driven by something as simple as a dirty shirt. Primary hygiene needs such as laundry become secondary or even tertiary as individuals must focus on the most basic acts of survival. Without access to free and accessible laundry services, how can people apply for a job or for housing? The Laundry Truck first launched in May 2017, Bayaud has launched a second May 2018 and now has several partners that serve as semi permanent locations for The Laundry Truck to go to providing services for those in need.
The Shower Truck was just launched in October 2019 and has two accessible shower stalls complete with sinks, mirrors, towels, and other necessities for individuals to get a fresh start.

Description

The Denver Day Works Pilot Program is an effort by the City of Denver to provide a low to no barrier work experience opportunity for people who are experiencing homelessness throughout the city with a specific focus toward engaging those not actively connected to supportive day services. In short, it's a pilot program designed to connect people who are experiencing homelessness and want to work, to work opportunities with the city and other private employers. With a day labor model participants are paid in cash at the end of the work day. During the work day Bayaud provides counseling services for employment and how to access community services.
