The Backdoor Theatre is the only theatre in the mountains West of the Foothills to provide first run movies week in and week out. We have awesome volunteers which help keep our prices low, but we want to provide more - more documentaries, more live theatre, more music. And for that, to expand our programming, we need your help. Please considering donating to the Backdoor Theatre!

Community Items of interest:

- BDT hosted a Warren Miller fundraiser for the Nederland Middle School Ski Team that raised over $2,200 for the team.

- BDT hosted a fundraiser for Wild Bear. This was another Nederland non-profit supporting another.

- BDT hosted a Wild-land Fire Prevention event.  This was a community awareness event. -

- BDT hosted Magnolia Road players.  Sixteen local students preformed in the production of the “Oddessy”. The students learned public speaking skills students learned and had a great time! There were many families in audience. There are also no theatre camps in 30 mile radius, and this provided a great opportunity for students to act.

- BDT hosted themed events for Rocky Horror Picture Show, Big Lebowski, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy and Grease. These community events are sponsored with one or more local businesses.

- BDT facilitated a paid student internship program over the summer of 2022.  This gave 9 students an opportunity to learn new skills.

- BDT shows a variety of first run movies.

- Covid has caused a 50% drop in attendance since 2019. The movie houses are giving people more streaming options while putting higher demands on the theatre that show movies.

Testimonials

The Backdoor Theatre Board asked members of the Community to complete a survey so the Board could better understand the needs of the Community. In addition to some suggestions for new and different programs we also received a bunch of testimonials:

Quotes from Megan Hess an Intern for the Backdoor Theatre:

"My job at the BDT has taught me many skills I will use throughout my whole life, including web page and social media management, communication skills, and the ability to solve problems on platforms that are new to me. Thank you BTD Crew for this amazing opportunity!"

Future Projects:  Concert with David Arkenstone;  a live theatre production once a year; and the Nederland International Film Festival.

Mission

The Backdoor Theatre is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing a sense of community to the people of the Nederland area in Colorado, with educational family entertainment, arts and humanities programs, and volunteer opportunities on the part of a wide variety of community members for all ages.

Background Statement

On Valentines Day, 2001, a group of Nederland community volunteers and film lovers formed an organization to create a movie theatre in Nederland, CO. A town of 1500 people, with a surrounding community of approximately 15,000 more audience potential, the closest movie theatre was 23 miles away. Also, entertainment options in the town mostly centered around the bar scene, and non-alcohol related entertainment options were few.

Therefore, Ruth Baldwin, Jan Cooper, and Kayla Evans founded the Backdoor Theatre as a service to their community for both children and adults.
