"AWTN is a huge asset to our homeless participants. When someone is street homeless they are not only at risk of freezing to death, but they also have huge safety concerns, issues with personal care.

One participant told me, an opportunity to get a shower and wash his clothes "…just makes me feel more human." Another participant stated being able to take multiple showers and an opportunity to relax, have a break form "survival mode" helped decrease his depression and increased his motivation to accomplish goals such as applying and interviewing for jobs. Another participant stated it reminded her of what it was like to be housed and what she was working towards.

A motel room provides a level safety many street homeless are denied on a daily basis. One participant reported that he wakes up about once an hour on the streets because he is worried about safety, in the motel he is able to sleep as much as 6 hours straight. Another participant reported that she is "so relieved to have a lock to lock me in" and spoke at length about the value of locks for her safety.

I have seen huge differences in people's motivation toward goals, decrease in mental health symptoms and an overall heightened mood in those who look forward to getting vouchers and those who have been housed for a night or more.

Aurora Warms the Night's ability to assist in meeting the needs of safety, privacy and basic personal care needs for individuals increases PATH's ability to meet the mental health and case management needs of our participants. Shelter vouchers are an important part of our participant's mental health, well-being and ultimately their recovery."
