Foster Care Program

Children and Youth (infants - 19 years)

Description

Since the environment of an animal shelter is not suitable for all dogs, we recognize that we are fortunate to have an extensive foster care program. This program enables us to house puppies, senior-aged dogs, dogs with special needs, and dogs for which we simply may not have space at the shelter. By utilizing our network of foster homes, more than 200, we ensure that each individual dog's need is met.

Description

The Rescues for Retirees program is designed to improve the quality of life for the senior citizens in the community and promote rescue dogs as community advocates.

Our Rescues for Retirees teams visit area assisted living and nursing homes to provide pet therapy to their residents. The human animal bond has proven to improve health and wellness and we are so excited to provide this service to people in our community through our Alums.

Evidence of Program's Success

The feedback we have received from this program has been overwhelming. One activities coordinator told us that Jake's visit to an elderly resident brought the first smile to her face she has seen in months. Each week we are getting contacted by facilities asking us to provide services to their residents.

Description

Canine Coaches is an enrichment program available to our dogs at out facility and in foster care. The goal of this program is to make sure their needs are met while in our care. Canine Coaches is a group of 60+ experienced volunteers, our enrichment coordinator and our local trainer. These volunteers provide additional care to our dogs that the 75+ dog walking volunteers are not trained to do. These activities range from outings, agility, advanced obedience, and behavior modification.

Description

Our shelter facility houses on average 30 dogs. We can hold an additional 15-30 dogs in our foster program. These dogs come to from over 25 other shelters or organizations. All dogs that enter our program are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped, heartworm tested and receive any other necessary medical care.

We have an adoption guarantee so that no dog that enters our program is euthanized unless they are suffering from an untreatable condition or have behavior issues that cannot be rehabilitated.

Evidence of Program's Success

Since 2007 we have rescued over 6800 dogs and facilitated their adoption and transition into forever homes. Over this time we have lost less than 0.01% due to untreatable disease or behavior. These numbers shows how evident our commitment is to each and every dog that we serve.

Our volunteers have proven vital to the overall success of our organization. From allowing us to keep staffing costs at a minimum due to their participation, to education for the public and providing the animals the time they need and more, we could not do it without them. In 2016 our volunteers donated 9,585 hours of service.
