Community (Feral and Stray) Cat Assistance Program

Description

Community cats are the cats you see (or possibly feed) in your neighborhood. These cats do not have a particular home or owner, and they might be feral or stray. The most effective way to control the community cat population is TNR (trap, neuter, return). TNR stabilizes the community cat population (no more homeless kittens); and reduces/eliminates the behaviors associated with mating (such as yowling and fighting). Community cats are vaccinated before being returned to their outdoor homes.

Almost Home's Community Cat Program:
• Collection and distribution of foods to various local community cat caretakers
• Educate/initiate/participate in local TNR situations
• Intake, medical, and adoption into forever homes of strays found to be living in community cat colonies
• TNR of "feral" cats rescued by or brought to Almost Home

Evidence of Program's Success

Program success is evidenced by the improved health of the community cats and the lack of kittens being born into the colony/colonies.

Bottle Baby Program

Description

The goal of this program is to reduce the number of unweaned kittens unnecessarily euthanized.

During "kitten season" (the breeding season--roughly April to November), a large number of unweaned kittens are orphaned or abandoned. Without foster homes equipped with the special training necessary to care for these babies, they could face euthanization.

Almost Home Adoptions receives unweaned kittens and provides veterinary care and loving foster homes for these kittens until they are able to be weaned. When they are old enough, the kittens are spayed or neutered, tested for FeLV/FIV, vaccinated, dewormed, and adopted to a forever loving home.

Evidence of Program's Success

Every year, over 100 bottle babies are raised in foster care, weaned, spayed or neutered, tested for FeLV/FIV, vaccinated, dewormed, and adopted to a forever loving home.
