Empowering women and supporting their efforts to achieve economic independence is ADP's priority. We move women from subsistence farming to agribusiness because when a woman earns money, she spends 90% on her family. Addressing the economic gap builds a path out of poverty. Join us on this quest!

Testimonials

As a Foundation Manager, we are proud and excited for our growing partnership with Africa Development Promise. In 2014, the Foundation provided ADP with its first major grant which helped establish the Rwanda women's farming cooperative and enabled ADP to attract additional donors and partners. Since that time, the Foundation has grown its commitment to ADP with annual grant funding and long-term plans to support growth and capacity building through financial and technical support. The Foundation team has met with ADP Founder and Board Chair, and traveled to Rwanda for a site visit to meet with the in-country team and the cooperative members. We continue to be impressed with ADP's strong, dedicated leadership and are committed to grow our partnership with this impressive organization.

I have worked in international development for more than 25 years. I have watched as Monica and her team have built Africa Development Promise in these past couple of years. The results that have been produced are outstanding because they start where the people are. Women farmers in Rwanda and Uganda have launched cooperatives but struggled to gain growth and success. Africa Development Promise stepped in beside them and enabled them to own greenhouses and even land. These gals provide support and strength for each other as they have grown their business. They have confidence in the future and walk together through the tough times.

Mission

Africa Development Promise's mission is to improve the lives and livelihoods of rural women in East Africa through training and resources that support their collective efforts to operate competitively in the marketplace.

Background Statement

Africa Development Promise (ADP) is a US-based non-profit organization that focuses on improving the lives and livelihood of rural women in Rwanda and Uganda, allowing them to gain economic self-sufficiency. Our primary entry point is agriculture because over 70% of women rely on subsistence farming for their livelihood or self-employment. We promote the cooperative enterprise model because it is a proven pathway for empowering women to achieve their life goals. After all, members can pool resources (money, labor, and knowledge) to create economies of scale. In addition, we offer vocational and business training to women interested in starting micro-businesses. ADP is poised to touch most of the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through our work. Still, nevertheless, we do believe that our potential to make the most significant impact in communities lies within SDG 1: No Poverty and SDG 5: Gender Equality.

With programs in Rwanda and Uganda, Africa Development Promise’s primary focus is agriculture because over seventy percent of the rural women rely on subsistence farming for food security and employment. As East Africa increases agricultural investments and moves toward market-based approaches, we work to ensure that women farmers are poised to take advantage of new opportunities. Since our inception in 2014, Africa Development Promise has been committed to strengthening the capacity of women-led agricultural cooperatives, building their resilience, and helping them advocate for themselves.
