Background Statement

Since 2009, Access AfterSchool (Access) has provided afterschool and summer programs focused on creative enrichment and positive youth development to elementary and middle school aged youth in the only programs of their kind in the region. Access' philosophy is that youth thrive when offered experiences that spark their passions, encourage movement and creativity and apply what they learn in school to their lives in the broader community. Maintaining low student to instructor ratios (maximum 10:1) fosters relationship building (both peer-to-peer and student-to-instructor) and a unique Youth Development Framework emphasizes seven core positive youth development elements (e.g., leadership, responsibility, collaborative problem solving) and college/career readiness skills that young people need to be successful. Transportation barriers, which are inherent in a rural service area spread over three counties and 3000 square miles, are eliminated because programming occurs directly in schools. Over half of all Access' participants are from low-income households and many parents that spend the majority of every day working and commuting experience decreased stress knowing their children are in a safe, supervised and supportive environment. Over the past nine years Access has served 16,622 students, hired 1,848 instructors and provided 1,833 classes from Basalt to Rifle.
