Background Statement

Alternatives for Youth (AFY) has been helping at-risk youth and their families for over 30 years in the Boulder and Weld County area by conducting an expulsion school, working with truancy, and providing afterschool and summer programs. Our current program, iTHRIVE, came about due to the overwhelming crisis of teens becoming involved in drugs and alcohol....and supporting the parents of those teens. We have seen an increase in drug use over the past 5 years and the epidemic is not stopping. iTHRIVE works with teens 12-17 that are just starting down that path of drug and alcohol use/abuse. our goal is to catch them early, help them understand they negative consequences to their brain and body and motivate them to engage in activities that are not drug related. We also work with the parents of those teens by teaching them new tools on how to improve parenting and communication. Our pre-post tests indicate our program is making a significant positive impact on the teens, with decreased drug use and an increase in perception of harm; as well as improved family communication.
