About Warren Village

For nearly 50 years, Warren Village has served over 8,300 formerly houseless, single-parent families, who, on average, spend 22 months building personal competencies, earning workforce certificates/degrees, and learning skills for personal growth, all toward changing their life trajectory. Our programs and services are implemented through a comprehensive and integrated approach to empower single-parent families toward personal and economic independence. By combining safe and affordable housing with high-quality early education and childcare services on-site, along with impactful adult enrichment programs, Warren Village provides a robust support system that addresses the unique social and economic challenges faced by one of Denver’s most vulnerable populations. Our innovative Two Generation (2Gen) approach has a profound positive impact on both parents and children within the same household. Targeted interventions for both adults and children delivered simultaneously are designed to dismantle multi-generational poverty. Our focus lies in housing stability, education, career development, personal finance, and mental and emotional well-being. By nurturing these aspects, our ultimate goal is to create lasting economic security that spans across generations, providing a strong foundation for a brighter future.

Warren Village staff, Board of trustees, and our developer team continue a relentless pursuit of creating increased services for vulnerable, low-income families in Denver. Set to open in late 2024, Warren Village at Alameda will include 89 units of supportive housing for families, a high-quality early learning center, playgrounds, community meeting space, college and workforce training classrooms, private rooms for one-on-one counseling, community gardens, and outdoor gathering spaces that will allow for connectivity to existing neighbors with the goal of fostering both opportunity and community. Importantly, this project significantly increases the availability of four-star-quality childcare in a community that is considered a “childcare desert.” With this new campus, the organization will leverage its expertise providing safe and affordable housing, education and wraparound supports for parents, and early education/childcare. Construction for Warren Village at Alameda began in August 2023.

Mission

Warren Village exists so low-income, single-parent families can achieve sustainable personal and economic self-sufficiency.

Background Statement

Located in Denver's Capitol Hill neighborhood, Warren Village was established in 1974 when citizens and business professionals saw an influx in the number of single-parent families struggling to subsist. These community members wanted to build a program that would give these families a chance at economic independence.

One of those community members was Dr. Myron Waddell, a physician who worked in Denver's inner city during the 1960s. Along with others in the community, he conceived Warren Village after observing an increasing number of single-parent families and accompanying high rates of poverty, family violence, and houselessness. An active member of Warren United Methodist Church, Dr. Waddell envisioned an "intentional community" of single-parent families who could live in a safe and decent temporary home while working toward economic independence. Over a period of nearly 10 years, Warren Church bought eight plots of land, razed the existing buildings, and donated the land for the creation of an urban village.
