Colorado Reads: Help Three Students Learn to Read

Three Students. One School Year. A Lifetime of Reading.

This Colorado Gives Day, Colorado Reads is raising $10,000 to fund one small tutoring group of three students for a full school year.

These are students who have passed third grade without learning to read confidently. By that point, school can begin to feel like a place where they are always behind. They may avoid reading aloud, guess at words, memorize routines, or quietly decide they are “not a reader.”

But most struggling readers are not lazy, unmotivated, or incapable. They need targeted instruction that meets them where they are and helps them build the foundational skills they missed.

Why School-Day Tutoring Matters

For many families, the most reliable option is private tutoring. But private tutoring can cost hundreds or thousands of dollars, putting effective reading support out of reach for many children.

Colorado Reads brings that support into the school day.

Through our Reads Tutor Program, trained literacy tutors provide small-group reading instruction for students in grades 3–9 who are significantly behind in reading. Tutoring happens during the academic day, at no cost to students, families, or schools.

Tutors track progress, adjust instruction, and coordinate with school staff so each student receives support that is focused, responsive, and purposeful.

Our Impact

This year, Colorado Reads provided tutoring support to students in multiple Colorado schools and saw strong midyear growth in foundational reading skills.

Our tutors help students build the skills and confidence they need to participate more fully in class and experience reading not as a source of shame or frustration, but as a tool for learning.
