Since 2016, tens of thousands of people have been locked in our immigration system for over 30 days despite having been granted bond - often because they could not afford it. Most are immigrants seeking asylum and have not been convicted of crimes or subject to immediate deportation. (Source: https://www.aclu.org/discretionary-detention-by-the-numbers)

In Aurora, CO the ICE facility is run by for-profit prison company, the GEO group. ICE pays the GEO group around $200 per person, per day to hold people (many of whom cannot pay their bonds to be released and therefore are kept in detention). 

In federal and state criminal bail systems, procedures require judges to consider a defendant’s ability to pay a bond. Sadly, such protections do not exist for immigrants in ICE detention centers, resulting in wealth-based detention. People should not be locked up simply because they can’t afford their bond.

The Immigrant Freedom Fund is a local nonprofit that helps people pay their bond so they can be released while their case moves through the court systems. A minimum bond is $1,500. There is no set maximum. Once a person completes their immigration case, the bond is revolved back to the fund. Thank you for your contributions!
