Testimonials

The Self-Image to Succeed
According to Dr. Joyce Brothers, "A strong, positive self-image is the best possible preparation for success in life." In addition to our mission, to help low-income, single parents achieve economic independence and become free from government assistance, Project Self-Sufficiency works to empower program Participants like Tiffany to believe in themselves and their ability to succeed.

Prior to Project Self-Sufficiency, Tiffany was in a constant struggle of making it paycheck to paycheck. Anytime there was a "bump" in the road, it put her behind and pushed her further into debt.

Tiffany shares "with PSS I was able to identify my dream career path, and ultimately graduate from a very difficult nursing program. Immediately after graduation I obtained a job making three times more than my previous job. I have also made major improvements to my credit, and have a one-year plan in place for buying a house. It took a lot of determination to push through the long nights of studying and to stay on track when problems arose. Ultimately, my strongest tool was critical thinking that allowed me to solve the complex issues that come from being a single parent, like who will watch my kids while I'm in clinical."

Tiffany graduated from Project Self-Sufficiency in 2019 and is grateful have found a career she loves and to not be living paycheck to paycheck.

Better Lives for Families
Project Self-Sufficiency works to ensure that single-parent families in Larimer and Weld Counties are able to achieve economic independence free from community and government assistance and improve the quality of life for parents and their children.

Heidi is a first generation college student and before she started Project Self-Sufficiency, she felt lost. She was a single mom of three kids, trying to make ends meet and provide for her family. When a friend told her about Project Self-Sufficiency, she reached out.

Heidi shares , "The program has helped me get back on my feet and has given me a push to become successful for myself and my children. They helped me get my car fixed, and I have worked with my Advisor, Chrissa, to discover my career goals. I was super nervous to go back to school knowing it had been 13 years since I graduated High School, but Chrissa has continuously encouraged me that I will do great."

Project Self-Sufficiency helped Heidi enroll at Front Range Community College and has supported her as she goes back to school through scholarships, back to school clothing for her kids, holiday gifts, and even a donated car through our Cars for Families Program.

Heidi has many goals and is looking forward to achieving her goals with her family by her side, "My kids are proud of me for going back to school and love that we all go to school together! I'm making a promise to my oldest daughter that I will graduate the same time she graduates High School, since I had her when I graduated and we will finish this together just as I did starting my journey when I had her!"

Mission

The mission of Project Self-Sufficiency is to assist low-income single parents in their efforts to achieve economic independence and become free from community and government assistance while building and maintaining strong, healthy families.

Background Statement

Project Self-Sufficiency evolved from the efforts of a countywide task force in 1985 with the goal of coordinating and expanding services for low-income, single parent families. The project began in October 1986, with the enrollment of 65 families. Project Self-Sufficiency of Loveland-Fort Collins was incorporated and approved for 501(c)(3) status in 1992.

Through a growing body of research, Project Self-Sufficiency determined that one of the most promising pathways out of poverty includes access to higher education. The program grew beyond volunteer-driven mentorship and barrier removal to a formalized curriculum of career planning, support with adult education and training goals, and career placement. Our best practice model has been replicated through the Durango Education Center in southwestern Colorado.

Today, our programs are offered to an average of 125 families concurrently. Every day, Project Self-Sufficiency breaks new ground with single-parent families to access their selfpower. Educational and career empowerment through 1:1 coaching, goal reinforcement, and significant support helping single parents cut through the stress and barriers to their success in order to access their selfpower and achieve a completely new life.

As we celebrate 37 years of service in 2023, we are proud to have provided opportunities and pathways to living-wage employment to over 1,300 families in Larimer and Weld Counties.
