Support Groundbreaking Research and Future Leaders in Science

Today, the work managed by the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) on behalf of National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research (NSF NCAR) and the UCAR Community Programs (UCP) has never been more critical. Our scientists and researchers provide the data and predictions that protect communities from hurricanes, help firefighters contain wildfires, and ensure the safety of our air travel.

As you may know, federal funding for scientific research is facing an unprecedented challenge. This potential loss of support doesn't just impact today's research; it severely limits the internships, fellowships, and early-career opportunities that inspire and train the next generation of scientists who must carry this work forward.

At Friends of the National Center, we believe that investing in STEM education and early-career development is the single most powerful action we can take. It's how we ensure a continuous pipeline of talent is ready to innovate and solve the complex problems of tomorrow.

The impacts of our research are vast, but the continuity of that impact is entirely dependent on our ability to train the next cohort of experts.

Imagine:

  • Early-career scientists whose innovative forecasts will help farmers optimize their harvests, contributing billions to our agricultural economy.
  • Graduate students working on the models that will help utility companies integrate renewable energy, making our power grid more reliable.
  • Post-doctoral researchers whose space weather monitoring will safeguard our satellites and national communications, which are vital to military readiness and global stability.

With your help on Colorado Gives Day 2025, we can continue supporting passionate young scientists who are on the forefront of research and innovation. Every donation helps ensure that these brilliant minds have the tools and opportunities they need to succeed.

Join us in fostering the next generation of scientific leaders. Donate today and be part of a community that believes in a brighter, more sustainable future.

Giving Activity

Mission

The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR) established Friends of the National Center as an alumni and community engagement program in support of UCAR’s Community Programs and the U.S. National Science Foundation National Center for Atmospheric Research.

The Friends mission extends to fundraising for STEM education, early-career initiatives, innovation, and collaboration for the sciences.

Background Statement

Friends of the National Center is a community development and private fundraising program of the University Corporation for Atmospheric Research (UCAR), which is a non-profit consortium of more than 130 university members and affiliates. Founded in 1960 to enhance the capabilities of the universities and to focus on scientific problems that are beyond the scale of a single university. UCAR carries out its mission through management of the NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and UCAR Community Programs (UCP).
