Colorado High Country Educational Treks

A nonprofit organization

Colorado Treks does life-changing work in the youth of the greater-Denver area, via the great outdoors of our state. BIPOC families have historically had barriers in place to accessing our natural wonders in Colorado, and we seek to remove them through our mentorship and cultural programs.

Testimonials

"Being involved in Colorado Treks has definitely helped me start my journey to become a more outdoorsy person! My first time going camping and horseback riding was the summer of 2016 with colorado treks! While on the trip I even went fishing for my first time! This experience is so special to me because if it wasn't for this awesome program, I wouldn't have ever got to experience real camping like that! Colorado treks also helped me discover that I have a green thumb! Last summer Dominic had asked me if I'm interested in doing a garden and immediately jumped on it! This year is round two and I'm super excited to see what we can grow!" - High School Participant

"This was great for me because it was good time to get away from the city and being able to just be in nature and actually having conversations with people because we had no (cell) service." - High School Participant

"I would (go again) because of its wonderful atmosphere out there the great scenery play Sun wind to get back to life if you're going through any type of struggling depression dealing with the loss and PTSD" -Young Adult Participant

Mission

To leverage the transformative power of the outdoors as a catalyst for personal growth, healing, and connection for youth and young adults facing life’s challenges.

Background Statement

Dominic Lucero founded Colorado Treks to provide transformative experiences through nature, like those of his own youth. When Dominic was 12 years old he was stabbed on the way home from school. It was through special fishing, hunting, and camping trips with his grandfather and nurturing by other elders in his family, that Dominic was able to recover fully and continue to thrive as a young person. Without the medicine of the mountains, the connection to the land, and the generational teachings of Cultura, Dominic knows his path may have led to a very different place. It is his hope that he can be the facilitator for his community as his elders were before him.
