A scholarship fund was established in 1999 to honor Joel Zucker, who died at the age of 44 on July 14, 1998, after completing his third Hardrock Hundred run. For the last three years of his life, Joel, a librarian from upstate New York, spent two weeks in Silverton to train. He loved Silverton and the surrounding mountains and always finished within the last few minutes of the 48-hour deadline. Joel was an inspiration to many long-distance runners and encouraged many other 'back-of-the-packers' to keep on running. His friends and family established this fund to preserve his memory and to show appreciation to Silverton for hosting this run every year since 1992. Scholarships are given to high school students who live in Silverton or the surrounding San Juan Mountain towns. Additional continuing education scholarships may be granted to former recipients who are still attending college or university.
